'Public debate is a sham'

GM Nation, the national debate on genetically modified crops began against a backdrop of confusion and criticism last week, with anti-GM campaigners describing the exercise as a sham.

Campaigners say no clinical trials on modi fied crops have ever taken place anywhere in the world, and as such it is impossible for the public to hold any kind of informed debate.

Dr Brian John, of GM Free Cymru, said: "Our view is that the public debate is a sham. Until proper clinical trials have been carried out it is ridiculous for anyone to be holding a public debate.

"The Government has never said it will listen to what the public tells it anyway. There is widespread cynicism about these debates."

The Mid and West Wales Green Party claim the debates do not allow the majority of people, particularly in Wales, to express an opinion

A spokesman said:

"Mid and West Wales Green Party is promoting action independent from the Government-organised workshops, which are few and far between. The programme of official public meetings will miss out most of this country so it is important people voice their opposition through other means."

GM Nation will continue until July 18th.
