GM debate is now under way To the Editor, I am writing to tell your readers in north Pembrokeshire that the national GM Debate, "GM Nation?" is now under way - and how they can get involved. Everyone knows something about the remarkable advances that scientists have made with genetic modification and many people have strong views for or against. Some worry about so-called "Frankenstein Foods". Others believe that GM crops are the key to overcoming world hunger. What we are doing with "GM Nation?" is to organise a series of debates and discussions all over the UK during the next six weeks, so that ordinary people can tell us what they really think once they've heard all the arguments and we will pass their considered views on to Government, who have to make the key decisions. Many people will find there's a debate going on near them -- the first was held in Swansea yesterday (Thursday). Or they may want to run a discussion themselves. We've got a versatile "toolkit" (video, CD Rom and interactive website) on offer - and for the larger meetings we can even provide a facilitator to come along and help see fair play. Individuals can ask for the own questionnaires. The number to ring is 0207-261-8616. The national debate is being run entire by independent of Government and we want as many people as possible to take part. The issues are important - for future generations, as well as ourselves. It's time to have your say. Yours faithfully, Professor Malcolm Grant County Echo, dateline: 6 June 2003 |
