Composting in Fishguard To the Editor, Your readers may be interested to know that this Sunday marks the start of International Composting Awareness Week (29th April - 5th May) which is being run simultaneously in the UK, USA and Canada to promote the composting of household waste, rather than landfill or incineration. The government have set a target to recycle or compost at least 25% of household waste by 2005 but local authorities have been slow to develop recycling initiatives including green-waste collections. As a group of people local to the Fishguard area, we have just started to meet to look at how we can promote recycling locally and, with the support of a small grant from Sustainable Pembrokeshire, set up our own community composting scheme. We are keen to hear from anyone who would like to get involved in this exciting new venture. Yours faithfully, Biddy Rawlence County Echo: dateline 25 April 2003 |
